Candle Care 101: Maximizing Burn Time and Performance with Your Premium Candles
Share
There's nothing quite like the warm glow and luxurious fragrance of a hand-poured candle transforming your space into a personal sanctuary. At Eternal Flame Creations, we craft each candle with premium plant-based wax and carefully curated fragrances to deliver an exceptional sensory experience. But did you know that how you care for your candle can dramatically impact its performance and longevity? Follow these expert tips to get the most out of every burn.
The First Burn Sets the Stage
The first time you light your candle is the most important burn of its life. Why? Candle wax has a "memory," and the first burn creates a pattern that will repeat throughout the candle's lifetime.
Always allow your candle to burn long enough for the wax to melt completely across the entire surface—from edge to edge. For our candles, this typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the size. This full melt pool is essential. If you extinguish the flame before the wax reaches the edges, you risk creating a tunnel down the center, wasting precious wax and fragrance around the perimeter.
Think of it as an investment in all the burns to come. A little patience on that first light ensures even, beautiful burns every time.
Wick Maintenance: The Quarter-Inch Rule
Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately ¼ inch. This simple step makes a world of difference.
A properly trimmed wick creates a controlled, steady flame that burns cleanly and evenly. An untrimmed wick, on the other hand, can cause smoking, soot buildup on your beautiful ceramic vessel, and that telltale "mushroom" shape at the tip. Not only does trimming prevent these issues, but it also helps your candle burn longer and more efficiently.
Use wick trimmers, scissors, or even nail clippers—whatever works best for you. Just make sure to remove the trimmed portion before lighting to keep your wax clean.
Burn Time Best Practices
While it might be tempting to let your favorite scent burn all day, candles perform best with mindful burn sessions.
Ideal burn time: 2-4 hours per session. This allows enough time for a full melt pool without overheating the wax or vessel.
Maximum burn time: Avoid burning for more than 4 hours at a stretch. Extended burns can cause the wick to destabilize and the vessel to become too hot.
Safety first: Never burn your candle when less than ½ inch of wax remains. This protects your surface and your vessel from excessive heat.
Between burns, allow your candle to cool completely and the wax to solidify before relighting or moving it.
Storage and Placement Matter
Where and how you store your candles affects their quality and longevity.
Avoid drafts: Keep candles away from open windows, fans, air vents, and high-traffic areas. Drafts cause uneven burning, smoking, and can diminish your candle's burn time.
Protect from sunlight: Direct sunlight can fade the color of your wax and weaken the fragrance over time. Store candles in a cool, dry place away from UV exposure.
Use the lid: When not in use, place the wood lid back on your candle. This preserves the fragrance intensity and keeps dust out of the wax.
Room temperature: Store at moderate temperatures. Extreme heat can cause the wax to soften or the fragrance to dissipate.
Give Your Vessel a Second Life
One of the beautiful aspects of our candles is the reusable ceramic vessel that houses them. Once you've enjoyed every last hour of fragrance, don't let that gorgeous container go to waste.
Freezer method: Place your candle in the freezer for a few hours. The wax will contract and pop out easily, leaving a clean vessel.
Hot water method: Pour boiling water into the vessel (leaving some room at the top). As the water cools, the remaining wax will float to the surface and harden, making it easy to remove.
Once cleaned, your vessel can become a chic planter for succulents, a holder for makeup brushes or pens, a catch-all for jewelry, or even a small vase for fresh flowers. It's our way of extending the luxury beyond the last burn—and honoring our commitment to sustainability.
